Saturday, April 2: St. Matthew Passion at 19 Church St., Cortland.
Part I at 4pm and Part II at 7:15 pm.
The Arts at Grace concert series and SUNY Cortland’s Department of Performing Arts will
present J. S. Bach’s complete St. Matthew Passion in English on Good Friday, April 2 at 19
Church Street, formerly the United Community Church, in Cortland. Dr. Stephen Wilson will
conduct.
Recognized as one of the most remarkable choral works ever written, the St. Matthew Passion is
rarely performed in part because of its scope. This highly complex masterpiece requires a
double chorus, two orchestras, a children’s chorus, and six soloists to tell the story of Good
Friday according to the Gospel of St. Matthew. On April 2 well over 65 children and adult
volunteer musicians from the area will join 49 highly trained professionals to offer the work to the
greater Cortland community. Soloists include tenor Kirk Dougherty, baritone Steven Stull,
soprano Lianne Coble, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Kay, tenor David Parks, and bass-baritone
David Neal. To learn more about the performers, visit www.cortlandmusic.org.
During the one-and-one-half hour intermission between Parts One and Two, a light dinner will
be available for $8.00 at Grace Episcopal Church, 13 Court Street, Cortland. To make dinner
reservations email The Arts at Grace at arts.at.grace@gmail.com or call Grace Episcopal
Church 607-753-3073 from 9-3 M-F
