Thru March, 2009: Watermedia Works by David Beale and John Downey
Cortland Free Library
28 Church St., Cortland

"Hillside Barn," watercolor by John Downey
"Land Meets Sea," Watercolor by David Beale
John Downey and David Beale are holding
Library, located at 32 Church St. in Cortland,
through the month of March. They will present
an informal artist talk open to the public
Thursday, March 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
“This series of exhibits is both a testament to
our friendship and the way our painting styles
complement each other,” explains David
Beale.
John Downey has been exhibiting his fine art
watercolor for more than 14 years here in
Cortland. Watercolor is John’s favorite
medium. Downey says that his work is a
visual representation of the ideas, thoughts
and imagery that have fascinated him over
the years since moving to Cortland. Downey’
s main influences stem from painters
Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer and
Andrew Wyeth, who, according to the artist
‘Used form and color to express their inner
self to the world.'
David Beale perhaps paints in a more
ethereal style. He has recently painted an
extended series of miniatures which “seem
to fit the times we find ourselves living in,”
says David. “They present their own artistic
challenges and opportunities to achieve an
intimacy that would easily get lost in a larger
painting. These delicate scenes are also
more affordable, and people can more easily
find a niche in their homes to display a
miniature. Their intimate glimpses can add
dramatically to the cozy feeling of a home.”
David also owns The Picture House and is
Executive Director of the Cultural Council of
Cortland County.
The exhibit can be viewed during regular
library hours. Call 753-1042 for more
information.
